Make it happen, make it matter: building, developing and maintaining a successful instrumental program

The rehearsal room is the ideal environment to discover the intersection between composer intent, conductor-teacher knowledge, and student skill development. Such a locus ensures a synthesis of understanding and wonderous musical outcomes…or does it? This presentation unpacks an investigation into effective teaching and learning within the ensemble rehearsal space, considering the contemporary educational context. A process of reflective practice, through the lens of investigating the practice of some of Australia’s finest music educators, has led to the refinement of a framework of teaching and learning within the ensemble that may be worthy of consideration for guiding future practice and music teacher education.
