It can be very intimidating being given a jazz ensemble to direct if you don't have much experience in performing jazz. It can leave you with a lot of questions of what to do. What is a good chart for the ensemble to learn? Why is the drummer so loud? The students are reading the notes correctly, but why does it still not sound right? This session is essential for teachers that are new to directing a jazz ensemble, or would like to develop their skills in directing a jazz ensemble. Topics will include:

  • Choosing appropriate repertoire for your ensemble
  • The roles of the rhythm section ie. what the drummer needs to do, walking bass lines, piano and guitar accompaniment
  • Understanding jazz phrasing and articulation
  • Improvisation for school students
