Panel discussion: Achieving excellence in technique, musicianship, and performance in the string orchestra chaired by Mark Sullivan
4th Oct 2018 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Many people shy away from teaching oboe and bassoon and just put them in the ‘too hard basket’. In this session, we aim to make teaching double reeds seem a little less scary. The two instruments are often grouped together, however, they are actually very different- from embouchure to fingering and many other aspects.
You will learn what to look for in a potential double reed student, the optimum time to start students and how to develop and maintain a double reed program. We will chat about the best method books, brands and models of instruments and talk about basic reed and instrument maintenance. The session will include tips, tricks and hacks for teaching these fantastic instruments. There will also be time at the end for questions.
Double reeds add rich colour to ensembles and they stand out in every crowd. What’s more the world needs more bassoonists and oboists! Your students are sure to have ‘double the fun’ if they learn a double reed instrument.
