Panel discussion: Repertoire, diversity and new music chaired by Rachel Howley

Rachel Howley has been an instrumental music educator and conductor for close to twenty years. She holds a Bachelor of Music, Graduate Bachelor of Education and Master of Music Studies and is also completing a Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. She is currently Director of Grace Academy at Grace Lutheran College which provides high quality Arts education to 1300 students across six locations at schools and in the local community. As well as regularly conducting a number of secondary school ensembles, Rachel has conducted the Queensland Wind Orchestra, Queensland Youth Orchestra Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble, various Queensland Conservatorium ensembles and is a member of the Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program conducting team. Rachel’s research explores the role of the conductor in championing the wind band works of Australian women and she is passionate about encouraging diversity through repertoire. Her contribution to music education has been recognised by being nominated for a National Award for Excellence in School Music Education in 2008.
