Keynote: The role of the body in generating, communicating, and understanding music performance

Mary Broughton is a researcher in the psychology of music and a percussionist. Her research themes focus on the role of movement and gesture in music performance production and communication, and audience engagement and development. She investigates questions and issues of relevance to music performance with theory and methods from the psychological sciences. As a percussionist, she has performed with orchestras such as the Queensland and West Australian Symphony Orchestras, as well as nationally and internationally as a solo and chamber musician. Mary has taught early-childhood music classes and percussion to students across the childhood period through to adults in the 3rd age of life. Mary is Lecturer in Music Psychology at the School of Music, The University of Queensland.
