Australian National Jazz Orchestra Artistic Director, Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra Artistic Director and Head of the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Studies Course, DAVID THEAK has enjoyed an exciting and dynamic career at the core of the Australian jazz scene since the mid 1990’s. David has a distinguished track record and experience as organiser of 7 national tours for the 17 piece Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra (JMO) and 2 European tours with his quartet. David has produced 5 CD’s with the JMO, all of which were nominated as Australia Jazz CD of the year (including winning in 2012) and has 2 of his CD’s nominated for ARIA awards in the jazz category. David has performed, recorded and toured with the following international big band luminaries, Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue, Bert Joris, Florian Ross, Charles Tolliver, Jim McNeely, Ed Partyka, Chris Potter, John Hollenbeck, Ed Neumeister and Alex Sipiagin.
David continues to be a tireless advocate for large ensemble jazz in Australia demonstrated through his work with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, as Artistic Director of the Sydney Conservatorium International Jazz Festival, as Program Leader of the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Studies course, as convener of the National Big Band Composition Competition and as a former advisory board member of the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO). David has been a seminal contributor to many jazz organisations including Sydney Improvised Music Association (Treasurer 2003 – 2007), Jazzgroove Association (President and Artistic Director 1998 – 2001), WAYJO (Advisory Board member 2008 – present), and was a member of The Sydney International Jazz Festival Board. As a saxophonist, David has been a finalist in the 2002 National Jazz Awards, 2004 Freedman Fellowship, and a triple nominee (and once time winner) for Bell Australian Jazz Ensemble of the year. David has performed concerts at all of Australia’s major jazz clubs and festivals (highlights include The Melbourne International Festival, Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, Brisbane Jazz Festival, Stonnington Jazz Festival, Jazz Now, Jazzgroove Summer Festival), and has performed concerts at many of Europe’s finest jazz clubs. In 2016 David founded 54records.com.au, a peer reviewed, original jazz CD label that supports new releases by Australian artists and is the artistic director for the Sydney Conservatorium International Jazz Festival which debuted in 2017.
